This should be the first water paramiter to monitor before adjusting pH, pH is the ammount of Hydrogen and Hydroxide dissolved in the water. It is measured on a 14 point scale, where 1 is the most acidic and 14 is the most basic (alkaline). Aquariums have natural fluctuating pH patterns that are usually lower in the evening and early morning than during the day.
